Appliqué mosaic is a wonderful and relatively freeform expressive medium used within this course. The main subject matter tends to comprise larger shaped pieces of glass as “appliqué”. Additional pieces of shaped glass can be prepared to fill the rest of the work and/or mosaic can be cut and applied as infills – although the choice is yours.
Applying pieces to a specially prepared substrate, as a transparent glass layer, allows the resulting panel to be mounted in/as a window. One attendee was inspired to prepare a beautiful panel as a sliding hatchway door between her kitchen and dining room – very effective. Another made a transparent glass box and then created a small decorative panel for each side.
Non-transparent work can also be created if desired – for example to mount on a wall and can even incorporate special reflective foils behind transparent glass pieces – to reflect the light back with a coppery, silvery or gold effect.
In this medium, the artist is freed of a lot of the structural limitations associated with working in lead or copper foil and can literally use almost any shaped piece of glass in the work.
Using a range of special glass cutting techniques and tools, even spirals and heavily indented pieces are no problem – your imagination sets the bar.
A very wide choice of glass colours and textures is available.
The course includes refreshments and ‘aide memoire’ notes to take home.
Please bring a packed lunch.
(More elaborate work ,that may require completion outside of the course day, is accommodated by providing finishing kits as required, to take home, also inclusive)
