To begin to learn and practise the main techniques used to construct stained glass items, as  ‘sun catchers’ or panels, using the copper foil method credited to Tiffany and LaFarge.

In this technique, firstly a self adhesive copper ribbon is applied around the edge of each piece of glass.  Solder is then used to create a raised bead across the ribbons of adjacent pieces of glass, to provide the structure to hold the work together.

More elaborate and detailed work can be created within a given area  – but, unlike leadwork, is not weatherproof and hence is used for interior work  (including, for example, lampshades).

Two separate course are available:
TF1 – a 1 day course, which teaches the basic techniques and allows people to complete a small item, such as a ‘sun catcher’
and
TF2 – a 2 day course which covers everything in more depth and enables people too create a panel, or a more elaborate and/or larger piece of work (it really is amazing what people achieve in just 2 days!)
Both courses cover (at different levels:
  • Pre-course contact to help with design/ideas (there are also hundreds of patterns available to adapt)
  • Design guidance/design considerations associated with copper foil work
  • Selecting glass
  • Draughting and templating shapes
  • Cutting and shaping glass
  • Building up the work into a panel/suncatcher
  • Assembling the panel, soldering, thorough cleaning and (if required) application of a ‘patina’,  to give a silvery, coppery or black finish to the solder seams
  • Final polishing and presentation

A wide selection of stained glass colours and textures, a wide range of different copper foils, flux, solder, patinas and full use of all necessary tools.

Both courses include light lunch, refreshments and ‘aide memoire’ notes to take home.

The next courses currently available:
